In this piece, we hear from our summer intern Ashley Hynes. Ashley has been an incredible team player over her time at Propeller and has made a true impact in our agency.
If you are interested in interning with us, read Ashley’s account and if you like what you see, get in touch with us today to see if there are any internship opportunities. Without further ado, here’s Ashley’s intern experience:
A Day in the Life of an Intern
This summer I moved to London for an internship with Propeller, a digital marketing agency, and each day has been as exciting as it has been challenging. This account covers what a day in the office looks like- Mondays and Fridays are work-from-home days, which is a great perk of the company.
Morning
A day in the life of an intern at Propeller starts with a morning commute (for me at least) and the mad dash of commuters on the tube, which seems like a rite of passage for any true Londoner. The bustling Northern line takes me to Angel station where the Propeller’s office is based, in Islington, North London.
A short walk through the colourful Camden passage takes me to the stunning office, adorned with its namesake on the building’s exterior. I usually grab a hot drink, something small for breakfast and my coworkers and I share our weekend or evening highlights – from mini trips to rooftop saunas.
After we spill the tea (not the English kind), I get started on my tasks for the day. My work tends to vary considerably from day to day as I assist the project and account management teams with any outstanding tasks and projects. No two days are the same – and every day brings variety that is dependent on the projects and client needs of the day.
My mornings can consist of shadowing clients through different project phases, from identifying their needs and pain points during the discovery phase to monitoring development progress through internal daily stand-ups. Other days are consumed by more hands-on tasks such as collaborating on designs, conducting research for pitches, and assisting with website builds.
One of my favourite things about the office is the music – which is great when I need a boost of energy. (Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso is my version of coffee in the morning.)
Lunch
Most days, everyone in the office takes lunch together. This is something I had never experienced before in previous intern experiences but found very wholesome. It has been a great way to get to know everyone and chat about our days so far. If it’s the last Thursday of the month we have a “fun lunch” together where we eat somewhere locally or get something on Deliveroo. If its not a fun lunch day I will usually grab something from a nearby restaurant or supermarket (because a chef, I am not) and walk along St. Regent’s canal if the weather permits.
Post-Lunch / Afternoon
After lunch, we head to the fridge to grab a Diet Coke or Dash to power us through the afternoon (the office boasts an endless supply!). After lunch, my day is as varied as my morning – recently I have been focusing on website development and content migration. I may join client calls and assist with design review sessions as well, or participate in a social media planning session. My days tend to be a blend of technical skills and creative problem-solving. The dynamic nature of multiple concurrent projects keeps me on my toes, demanding adaptability and a keen eye for detail.
The working day tends to start rolling down from 5:30, at which time I’ll get ready to head home or stay for an Aperol Spritz at the in-house bar for a well-deserved wind-down with my colleagues.
