Near-field communication (NFC) stickers allow two devices to communicate wirelessly. Technology is embedded in a small physical tag that facilitates data transfer between nearby mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and other electronics.

What is the difference between NFC stickers and RFID?

NFC stickers are often compared to RFID, but the two are different.

RFID tags have a one-way communication method, meaning an RFID-enabled item sends a signal to an RFID reader. Meanwhile, NFC devices have a one- and two-way communication capability, which gives the NFC technology an upper hand in use cases where transactions are dependent on data from two devices, such as card payments. Mobile wallets like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Android Pay, and other contactless payment solutions are all powered by NFC technology.

So in essence, RFID tags are great for inventory tracking and NFC tags work well for enhanced communication.

Our top favourite uses for NFC stickers…

We’ve looked at NFC stickers and see how they could help our clients in hospitality and had a play with some rapid prototyping. We’ve identified some uses, each designed to elevate guest experiences:

1. Smart Room Customisation:

Placing NFC stickers strategically in guest rooms allows visitors to personalise their stay. Guests can tap their smartphones on designated NFC stickers to customise room settings such as temperature, lighting, and entertainment options. This integration enhances convenience, providing guests with a tailored and memorable experience.

2. Contactless Concierge Services:

Expanding on the contactless concierge concept, NFC stickers located in key areas throughout the hotel provide guests with quick access to a range of services. By tapping their smartphones, guests can access information about local attractions, restaurant recommendations, and even request additional services. This user-friendly approach ensures a seamless and engaging experience for guests.

3. Gamifying Guest Engagement:

Introducing a gamified loyalty program powered by NFC technology not only entertains guests but also keeps them engaged throughout their stay. By completing challenges or exploring different parts of the hotel, guests accumulate points and unlock rewards, fostering a sense of excitement and loyalty.

4. Express Check-In and Check-Out:

Simplifying the check-in and check-out process, NFC stickers at the hotel’s entrance and reception area enable guests to tap their smartphones for an express experience. This includes obtaining key information, such as room details and billing summaries, ensuring a swift and efficient arrival and departure process.

5. Quick WiFi Access:

NFC stickers strategically placed in common areas, such as the lobby or dining areas, allow guests to tap their smartphones for quick and secure WiFi access. This straightforward method eliminates the need for complex passwords and enhances connectivity, ensuring that guests can stay seamlessly connected throughout their stay.

6. Virtual Tour Guides with WiFi Coverage Maps:

Enhancing the guest experience, NFC stickers placed in communal areas or near points of interest trigger virtual tour guides when tapped. Alongside providing information about the surroundings, these guides include detailed WiFi coverage maps. This ensures that guests exploring the hotel premises or nearby attractions are well-informed about available WiFi hotspots for uninterrupted connectivity.

In summary...

The integration of NFC technology in the hospitality industry offers a myriad of possibilities, ranging from personalised room experiences to gamified engagement and this doesn’t have to break the bank, it can be small, cost-efficient experiments.
